Gods of the Christians
Joe Durai
There are gods many and lords many
that are calling for faithful devotion and worship - even from the Christian. These gods are not made
with men’s hands. These are not blind, deaf and dumb gods. These gods are not the traditional pagan
gods, but rather specialist gods, sent by the god of this world to lure, deceive, torment, destroy and to
render ineffective, the life of Christ in the believer. These spirits cannot rob the salvation of a child of
God, but they work ceaselessly to keep a Christian out of the will of God. The power of these gods is
evident by their success in rendering a Christian ineffective.
Children, education and higher education, jobs and careers, lands and buildings, material possessions
that give a status, carnal relationships, and yes, a dozen other cares, but the care of the kingdom of
God, and the House of the Lord, have been tempting God’s chosen people.
A Christian has been cleansed to serve the Living God (Heb 9:14). But the worldly, sensual, pleasure
loving ungodly systems of today clamour for the service of the Christian. In a hundred different ways,
the Christian is being drawn away from his place and purpose in the House of the Lord.
The Christian fails to realise that he is living because of the church. The church has long become a
place to visit on Sundays rather than a way of life. The Christian’s life is first in the church. He is
firstly a member of the body of Christ and then members of one another in the church. A Christian
is not to use the church as a place to help him survive or “come up” in this world or as an insurance
policy. Rather, he is to be a useful member and instrument of the church.
A big spirit has been holding the people of God in many cities across the world spell bound. He is no small spirit.
Myriad of God’s people have fallen a prey to his guile. He is one of the larger spirits from the pits
of hell, from the adversary of our souls.
He rules effortlessly because of the weakness of God’s people. He has been master of all he
surveys, because of the Christian who has been wanting much of all he surveys, having one
foot in the kingdom of God and another in the kingdom of satan, with a partial trust in the God
of all flesh and a partial trust in the arm of flesh. This spirit has had his way because God has
not had the faithful allegiance of His children. He rules the world of the Christian because the
Christian has forgotten that friendship with the ways of this world is enmity with God. He dominates
the average Christian home because the Christian has become double minded, forgetting that to be
carnally minded is death, and to be spiritually minded is peace.
This power demon influences the Christian who has not set his affection on things above,
but rather on the baser things of this world. Having lost a vision of the glorious inheritance in
the business of God’s family and household, the Christian, forgetting that the wisdom of this
world is foolishness in the sight of God, is anxiously waiting on the porches of businesses run
by sons of satan. How many sons and daughters of God with a call of God on their lives have
decided to serve their Heavenly Father during their retirement years, after giving their best years
in the service of the affairs of this world!
Many children of God have bowed down to this cunning devil because they have failed to listen
to the admonition of the Lord that “all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes
and the pride of life is not of the Father”.
This seemingly good looking spirit has succeeded in major materialistic cities and communities when other master spirits have failed
in their attack against the churches. He rules because the Christian is heavy laden with the cares
of this world and seeks the things that the Gentiles who know not God seek. He has made many
a Christian his meek, diligent and obedient disciple because he assures “blessings” even as Satan
once offered all that is in the world to our Lord in the wilderness.
Not long ago, I saw this trickster. He was bigger and better looking than his co-labourers. His
outstanding features were his height, which was about 5 feet and his fair colour which looked more
anaemic. The greatest majority of God’s people meekly opened their lives to him. He stood in a
very casual manner, while all the people before him allowed him to dictate.
I was infuriated to see him effortlessly rule God’s people, churches of God and even many priests
of God. When he stood, he ruled, as the guardians of the faith flinched and opened the gates of
God’s house to this master demon.
I waited on the Lord to identify this waylayer of our soul. In a short time the Holy Spirit revealed the
name of this demon god. He is
the god of education
Jesus said, “Watch and pray least ye enter into temptation”. As we pray and watch the world
condition today, what do we see in the field of education in our big cities? Watch how the lives of
Christians revolve around education and is dictated by the educational system of today. Have
you noticed how education has robbed Christians of time, energy, spiritual stamina, their spiritual
life and their usefulness in the churches? Have you noticed how many families live in debt and
financial ruin because they have to appease the god of education? Education that this world
requires and offers is abundantly available but no man can buy time. God exhorts us to redeem
the time because the days are evil.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and God gives true knowledge and understanding.
Satan has as usual perverted a gift of God, to the point that it now works against God.
Years are spent in training up a child in the way of this world’s wisdom, but how many years are
spent in spiritual training and Bible study? A nation that once had the Bible as its textbook in
school, now struggles to retain Bible reading and prayer in its classrooms.
The children of Israel because of unholy alliances often offered their children as a sacrifice by
fire to strange gods. John the Baptist cried out that the One who came after him would baptise
with the Holy Ghost and fire. But today, there is a growing temptation to offer our children on the
burning altars of education as the high priests and priestesses of this demon god woo the weak
and the unstable Christian.
Potential ministries are nipped in the bud as worldly wisdom declares that higher educational
skills are required. Many a David and a Timothy have been pushed by their “godly custodians” into
the awning portals of higher education even as David was encouraged to use the armour of Saul.
The human intellect is crowned and worshipped as the voice of the Creator gets fainter
One in the ministry asked, “Why can’t our children go for the best higher education and then serve
the Lord?”
The Spirit of the Lord flashed back and said, “Why can’t they be filled with the Spirit and the Word
and do my work?”
The rebellious, lukewarm and backslidden having been “blessed” by the god of this world have
entered the pastoral and evangelistic areas of the Church to gain an aura of respectability. It
will not be long before they counterfeit the other offices with slick sermons that will unwittingly
draw one into the paths of temptation. But, let His sheep in His sheepfold hear His voice.
Make no mistake about this, oh child of God. You have been warned about this power demon,
who masquerades as an angel of illumination, the one who is challenging Jesus the true light of
the world that now shineth in our hearts to give the knowledge of the glory of God.
You shall have no other gods before Him. You shall not bear the star or image of any god in your
heart. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. Do not bow
down to this god of education.
The world cannot give you light, because the whole world is in darkness. You are the light of the
world. Be not conformed to this world, but be an example in all things to the people of the world.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of all true wisdom, and His wisdom and understanding will be
the stability of our times.
Fear not O children of Zion
For the Lord thy God is among you.
Do not look on people’s faces and be afraid
For they that know their God
Shall great exploits do.
Those who deal with this world and use the things of this world let them live as though they were
not absorbed and engrossed by it and had no dealings with it for this world in its present form is
passing away (2 Cor 7:31).
The wisdom of this world is foolishness in the sight of God
